Don’t Build a Funnel Yet (Until You Read This First)

Funnels are the sexy buzzword of online marketing. Everyone tells you, “You just need a funnel!” as if it’s a magic slot machine that spits out cash.
But here’s the truth: building a funnel without a strategy is like building a restaurant before you’ve tasted your own cooking. You’ll invest hours, energy, and probably tears only to realise you’ve created a beautifully automated money pit.

Step 1. Get Clear on the Why

Before you even touch a funnel builder, answer this:

  • Who exactly are you talking to? (Hint: “everyone” is not an answer.)

  • What specific problem are you solving for them?

  • Why would they choose you over the other dozen offers they see this week?

Pro tip: If you can’t write your offer in one clear sentence, your funnel will struggle before it even starts.

Step 2. Validate Before You Automate

The biggest mistake? Automating an untested idea.

  • Sell it manually first via DMs, calls, or a simple checkout link.

  • Collect feedback. Listen more than you talk.

  • Make tweaks while it’s still easy to change.

Why this matters: If it’s not selling in person, it won’t magically sell in a funnel.

Step 3. Map the Experience, Not the Software

Most people start by asking, “Which funnel tool should I use?” Wrong question.


Start with:

  • What’s the first touchpoint your audience has with you?

  • How do you want them to feel as they move through your process?

  • What is the next logical step after each interaction?

Once you’ve mapped the experience, then (and only then) pick the tech that fits not the other way around.

Step 4. Build Small, Then Scale

Don’t start with a 17-step funnel, a webinar, and three upsells.

  • Start with a minimal version: landing page → offer → follow-up emails.

  • Get it working. Then, and only then, add complexity.

  • Scaling garbage just gives you more garbage, faster.

Bottom Line

A funnel is not a business plan. It’s a tool and a tool is only as good as the strategy behind it. Build your clarity first, your validation second, your experience third. Then? Go ahead and make that funnel print money while you sleep.
